A modern farmhouse kitchen - with no open shelves - or white!

kristi approached me wanting just to pick my brain about updating their kitchen - without spending a lot of money. she told me they planned to replace the flooring, wanted to paint their cabinets & counter-tops + achieve a modern farmhouse look without using white [ they have 3 small boys ] she also told me she was game to paint her table & chairs + she loved turquoise and wanted to use ship lap somewhere. The back splash was a keep as well because it had just been installed not too long ago.

I was totally up for the challenge! I started with some inspiration of a few painted kitchens  i had saved on pinterest & knew this green hue would be hard wearing + look so sharp with the blue she wanted to incorporate.

I continued to build off this inspiration by suggesting black harware , some affordable lighting options , a faucet & tying it all together with a faint powder blue that will compliment the wood wall ( bottom swatch ) and blend it all together.

If they have a little more room left in the budget - I suggested replacing the dining chairs to bring a more modern look to the traditional pedestal table.

kristi also plans to remove the glass from the hutch as well as from a few of the uppers to display some of her pretty dishes + create a more open and modern look - without the high maintenance that some people fear of open cabinets or shelves - I think it will look great!

they had once considered painting the counter tops but i felt that it may not stand up as well to the wear and tear of the farmhouse lifestyle - i showed them how simple a wood counter could be and they loved the idea + the nicks and cuts will only add to the character!

I also included a detailed instruction and source sheet with prices included where possible.

With these tools in hand they are able to start their project with confidence and vision that it will look how they want + be on budget! The best part - all I needed from her were a few snapshots of her space and a couple of hours to give her this peace of mind. I can't wait to share the finished product soon!
